In
support of the Smithsonian Institution's research, education, and
public outreach mandate, the Cataloging Services Department (CSD)
provides intellectual access to all materials selected for the Smithsonian
Institution Libraries' (SIL) collections and maintains this information
for use by the institution's scholarly and research community as
well as the public.
The
Cataloging Services Department is comprised of two sections, Original
Cataloging (OC) and Catalog Management (CM), who support and augment
each other in the mutual pursuit of department and SIL goals. The
department uses OCLC,
a bibliographic utility that enables global sharing of cataloging
information, and participates in cooperative efforts, such as the
Program
for Cooperative Cataloging, to provide cataloging services as
effectively and economically as possible. CSD creates bibliographic
and authority records for print, nonprint, and electronic resources
and contributes original work to the OCLC database and the RLG Union
Catalog. Adhering to international standards of research and record
creation, CSD maintains the quality and integrity of the SIL online
library catalog within the Smithsonian Institution Research Information
System (SIRIS),
a resource available to the public through the SIL Web site. In
addition, CSD manages contracts with external vendors for cataloging
services.
