Somali Wild Ass (Equus asinus somalicus)

Joseph Smit 1836–1929
Watercolor, ca. 1884.

With a stripe pattern almost the reverse of the quagga’s, the Somali wild ass is actually a kind of donkey, whose natural habitat is northeastern Africa. It has been considered critically endangered since 1996.
