|The Curtis Family ~ Who Was Edward S. Curtis?|
"Try to make your work show some individuality . . . make it look yourself; let it show that you have put part of your life into it."
~ Edward S. Curtis, The Western Trail, Seattle, 1900
At a time when photographers were struggling to establish photography as a legitimate art form, Curtis' work was already being hailed for its artistic merits. Curtis saw himself as an artist with a mission.
"I have made about every sacrifice a human being can for the sake of the work, and the work is worth it . . . The lack of comparatively paltry dollars is maddening."
~ Edward S. Curtis in a letter to J.P. Morgan's office, 1913
