The Grolier Club is pleased and honored to be the host of Voyages: A Smithsonian Libraries Exhibition. For over a century the Club has welcomed the book-loving public into its exhibition hall to see great collections of books, manuscripts, and prints. We like to think of our exhibitions as voyages into uncharted territory, and our visitors as fellow-travelers bent on discovering something new about literature, art, and history, as embodied in manuscript, print, and the graphic arts.
Sometimes the Club sets out to discover and map a new genre, such as books famous in the history of medicine, or lithographic portraits, or calligraphy, or the work of World War II poets; and sometimes our goal is to foster fresh appreciation for the treasures of a venerable institution, such as the Smithsonian Libraries. The exhibition and accompanying public lectures are planned as a series of journeys: journeys by land, air, and sea; journeys of the mind and of the imagination. The Grolier Club joins the Smithsonian Institution Libraries in wishing our visitors a bon voyage.
