Date of Image:
Caption on Image:
Rhinoceros zoo als die meest afgebeeldt worden [The rhinoceros as it had been commonly depicted]
More about this image:
The armored beast depicted here shows the influence 16th-century engravings of rhinos. (It is in fact an Indian rhinoceros, distinguished by its single horn.) Following it in Kolb's book is an illustration demonstrating the advantage of direct observation: it depicts an African rhinoceros that German astronomer Peter Kolb encountered during his travels and described in detail in the text.
