Roald Hoffmann, Cornell University's Nobel laureate in chemistry,
delivered the 1995 Dibner Library Lecture on "Chemistry Imagined"
which explored connections between science and art. The May 30
illustrated lecture was featured in conjunction with the opening
of the exhibition Science and the Artist's Book (see p. 1). More
the 100 attended the lecture, including 25 of the exhibition's
participating book artists. Professor Hoffmann is the author of
the Smithsonian Institution Press's Chemistry Imagined (1993,
1994) and two collections of poetry, The Metamict State (1987)
and Gaps and Verges (1990). The lecture was supported by The
Dibner Fund.
Tom Garnett, head of the Systems Department, has completed a
year-long program as a Fellow of the Council on Excellence in
Government. The Council is a professional organization whose
mission is improving performance in government. Garnett's project
was opening the Libraries' treasures to a wider audience by
establishing a Libraries' World Wide Web server program.
Jim Gleason, winning bidder at the 1995 Women's Committee Craft
Show auction for a lunch and tour of the Dibner Library of the
History of Science and Technology, treated Mrs. Evelyn Hanna and
Mrs. Mary Schroeder, to the prize event. William E. Baxter gave
the women a tour of the Dibner Library and Director Barbara J.
Smith then hosted a lunch November 7. The 1994 Craft Show auction
winner, Ms. Kathy Porter, and her mother, Mrs. Lib Porter, came
to lunch with Director Smith and toured the Dibner Library in
May, when the room re-opened after renovation.
Susan F. Blaine (at right), head of the Libraries' Preservation
Services Department, moderated a CAPNet (Capital Area
Preservation Network) program on emergency preparedness on April
28. CAPNet was organized in 1994 to encourage sharing of
preservation information and resources in the Washington area.
Participants included private individuals and representatives
from local universities and associations and from government
agencies. Speakers at the program were, from left, Diane Kresh,
Library of Congress, John Van Bogart, National Media Laboratory,
Carrie Beyer, Library of Congress, Margaret Byrnes, National
Library of Medicine, Mary Suzor, National Gallery of Art, Ann
Siebert, Library of Congress, and Susan Blaine. (Not pictured:
