(CIRLA),
a consortium of six regional libraries formed to promote library service and cooperative activities. Founding
members are Georgetown University, Howard University, Johns Hopkins University, Smithsonian Institution,
University of Delaware, and University of Maryland College Park. CIRLA's overall goal is to enhance
education and research at member institutions through collaborative development of library collection and
service programs and expanding use of information technology. Director Barbara J. Smith serves as
secretary-treasurer of the group.

The Libraries is distributing bookmarks to celebrate the 150th anniversary year. Printed on acid-free
lightweight paper, the bookmark carries a "bright idea" image from the 1883 The Edison System of
Incandescent Lighting, one of the 300,000 pieces in the Libraries' collection of trade catalogs. These
souvenirs are available at the circulation desks of all 18 branch libraries and are being distributed
throughout 1996 with each piece of interlibrary loan material sent from the Libraries.
