Libraries' Committee
Director Barbara J. Smith convened the first meeting of the Fiscal Year 1997 term of the Libraries' Users Advisory Committee in October, briefing members on an interlibrary loan agreement reached by the Chesapeake Information and Research Library Alliance (CIRLA), of which the Libraries is a founding member. New advisory committee members are Ana Maria Ford, Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Elaine Johnston, Office of General Counsel, Patricia Gossel, National Museum of American History, Mel Wachowiak, Conservation Analytical Laboratory, and Sorena Sorensen, National Museum of Natural History. Continuing members from the 1996 commmittee are Wendy Aibel-Weiss, National Postal Museum, Melanie Bond, National Zoological Park, and Paul Ceruzzi, National Air and Space Museum.

Exhibition on Smithsonian Research in Latin America
Margaret Dittemore, Anthropology Branch, and Janice Ellis, Preservation Services, contributed to Expeditions: 150 Years of Smithsonian Research in Latin America, a Smithsonian exhibition at the Inter-American Development Bank which was open from late September through November 8. The exhibition was prepared with the cooperation of the Smithsonian Counselor to the Secretary for Latino Affairs Miguel Bretos, the Office of Smithsonian Institution Archives, the Anthropology Department, National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian Institution Libraries, and the Inter-American Development bank. Dr. Dittemore was one of the exhibition catalog's co-authors.

In Brief
On October 16 the Libraries hosted a reception for the Association for Research Libraries (ARL) membership which includes directors of the 119 largest research libraries in North America. Guests toured the Libraries Exhibition Gallery and the adjacent exhibition, Science in American Life, in the Museum of American History. Duane Webster, ARL's executive director, commented that he "was pleased [Provost] Dennis O'Connor could join us and welcome the members ... and Arthur Molella's entertaining and informative comments" were appreciated.
