Libraries' 150th-Anniversary Exhibition

From Smithson to Smithsonian: The Birth of an Institution, an official Smithsonian 150th-anniversary exhibition, opened July 2 in the Libraries' Exhibition Gallery in the National Museum of American History. Organized by the Libraries' Nancy E. Gwinn, the effort was a collaboration among several Institutional offices. Leading the curatorial team was Pamela M. Henson, head of the Institutional History Division of the Office of Smithsonian Institution Archives, and assisting her as co-curators were Cynthia Field, head of Architectural History and Historic Preservation, Marc Rothenberg, Editor of ThePapers of Joseph Henry, and Richard Stamm, Keeper of the Castle Collection. The Libraries' William E. Baxter, Exhibition Officer, and Janice Stagnitto Ellis, Book Conservator, lent their skills to the effort, as did Office of Exhibits Central staff Diana Cohen Altman who edited the script, and Mary Wiedeman, the exhibition designer. Office of Imaging, Printing and Photographic Services' staff provided crucial services. Provost O'Connor spoke at the opening reception on July 2, noting the effectiveness of cooperation among Institutional offices in presenting anniversary programs to the public. The exhibition was supported in part by the Smithsonian Women's Committee. Pamela Henson, et al. Cynthia Field and Richard Stamm WIDTH=218 HEIGHT=361
