The Wineland Research Library Endowment was established in October in conjunction with the purchase of the Charlotte and Lloyd Wineland Collection of Native American and Western Exploration Literature (see article in Information #82). Income from the endowment will support present and future collections and projects relating to Native Americans and Western Exploration such as (but not limited to) acquisition, cataloging, preservation and housing of collections; exhibitions, public promotion and awareness; and study and research. This generous gift will also ensure that the Wineland Collection is cared for and used to further the study of the Early American West. The late Mr. Lloyd Wineland engaged in a thorough study of Native American history and culture, as well as exploration of the American West, and established a rapport with galleries, collectors, and scholars. He and his wife, Charlotte Wineland, gathered the collection over many years. Director Nancy E. Gwinn welcomed members of the Wineland family and other guests at a reception held in SIL’s Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology on October 29.
