"Upland Plover" from Alexander Wetmore, Birds, part 1, plate 5. Vol. 9, Warm-Blooded Vertebrates, Birds and Mammals. Washington, DC, 1931. Wetmore was Assistant Secretary of the Smithsonian when this book was published, and later served as the Institution's sixth Secretary, 1945-1952. This copy has the author's inscription to Miss Beatrice Thielen, who later became his wife. Gift of Margaret W. Harlen, Wetmore's daughter
