Bill Crocker, Smithsonian anthropologist, interviews village elder Raimundo Roberto at a Canela village in Brazil. Crocker has worked with the Canela, a South American Indian tribe, since the late 1950s documenting their life and experiences in a rapidly changing world. In this photo, Crocker wears shorts like most Canela; but Raimundo, as a modernizing chief, wears Brazilian attire. The two men have worked together for many years. Says Crocker of their relationship, "Raimundo is so willing to provide only the truth as his contribution to the research on his people, that in a day I obtain data that would have taken a week to verify 40 years ago."
