The
Smithsonian Institution Libraries (SIL), in cooperation with the National
Science Foundation, has sponsored the translation into English of over
280 scientific and scholarly studies since 1960. Funded with special foreign currency under the provisions of Public Law 480, publishers in India, Pakistan, Egypt, Israel, and Poland produced English-language translations of works requested by Smithsonian research staff. With the completion of two series, Mammals of the Soviet Union and Flora of the USSR, the SIL Translations Program will come to an end when all available foreign currencies are spent.
