William Fitzhugh, archaeologist and Director of the Smithsonian's Arctic Studies Center (ASC), on the Smithsonian's research vessel, Pitsiulak, finds a route through pack ice in outer Frobisher Bay, Baffin Island, Canada. The ASC coordinated an international expedition studying the experiences of native Inuit peoples with the early (1576-1578) European explorer, Martin Frobisher, to the region. Fitzhugh found and documented evidence of Inuit-European contact and trade. Today's Inuit are interested in this information for tourism and development.
