Contributions from the U.S. National Herbarium was first published in 1890 by the United States Department of Agriculture. From July 1, 1902, forward it was published as a Bulletin of the United States National Museum. The series was discontinued after volume 38, 1974, and was published under the title Smithsonian Contributions to Botany. During a hiatus in publication of the Contributions to Botany, the original title (Contr. U.S. Nat'l. Herb.) was revived by the Department of Botany, Smithsonian Institution, and publication continued under the [old] name with volume 39, 2000. A narrative describing the history of the Contr. U.S. Natl. Herb. appeared in The Plant Press, vol. 7. No. 4, 2004.
