Reader
Services
With its 20 libraries this division
of the Smithsonian Institution Libraries plays an essential role
at the Institution. The collections of 1.5 million volumes with
40,000 rare books include especially strong holdings in most of
the Institution's historical disciplines.
Technical
Services
This division comprises three centralized departments of
the Smithsonian Institution Libraries: Acquisitions
Services, Cataloging Services,
and Interlibrary Loan Services.
Division staff perform services for all SIL branches and by agreement
for other Smithsonian units. Staff serve as specialized consultants
and expert resources in the technical fields of library and information
science and general administration.
Digital
Library & Information Systems
The Digital Library and Information Systems Division comprises
the New Media Office, Preservation Services, and the Systems
Office. The New Media Office is responsible for digital collections
and the Libraries' Internet presence. Preservation Services coordinates the conservation and preservation of special and general library collections. The Systems Office supports
the Libraries' staff in their use of information technology including
management of the integrated library system, the Smithsonian Institution
Research Information System (SIRIS).
