Interlibrary
Loan Services supports the work and meets the information needs
of Smithsonian Institution staff by providing material resources
not held by Smithsonian Institution Libraries. Material necessary
for research, such as books, dissertations and microfilm can be
borrowed from other libraries. Photocopying of periodical articles
or short sections of books may also be obtained. Interlibrary Loan
Services also provide outside libraries access to Smithsonian Institution
Libraries collections by circulating original and photocopied material
on interlibrary loan. Interlibrary Loan Services, through lending
and borrowing, handles over 10,000 requests per year. Conditions
of these services are determined by Interlibrary Load Code of the
American Library Association and by individual lending library's
policies.
