~last update 2016-03-09 The 2016 file was created on 11/30/2015 and contains 863,222 separate MARC records in one zipped file. The single file containing all the Smithsonian Libraries' catalog MARC data has some local tag usage you may want to know about. Our Sirsi/Dynix Horizon catalog stores the id for each MARC record separately from the record. We refer to that id as the "bib number". For the purposes of this export, that bib number was inserted into the 001 tag (no subfield delimiter.) You will not find that tag/data combination when using the live catalog. MARC records are "title" level records. We do not have "item" information, e.g. a serial's volume and issue data, in MARC format. When creating this giant file, we wanted to include this item information, so it is stored in the 999 field in the following way: 999 $d copy $g collection $i barcode $l location $o call number Copy reflects any volume/issue information, collections are logical or illogical groupings of books within that particular physical location. Of course the call number can also be found in the 050 or 090, but 999 $o reflects the actual local call number - a few of our locations have custom call number schemes to accomodate their collections, particularly collections in AAPG (Smithsonian American Art Museum and National Portrait Gallery Library) which classifies works about specific artists under the N 40.1 call number.
