Author: Vegetius Renatus, Flavius
Short Title: De re militari. (1487)
Title: Flauii Vegetii, uiri illus., ad Valentinianum Augustum Epitoma institutorum rei militaris ex commentariis Catonis, Celsi, Traiani, Hadriani, et Frontini liber primus[-quartus]. [Sexti Iulii Frontini uiri consolaris Strategematicon liber primus[-quartus]. ...
Imprint: Rome: [Eucharius Silber, 1487]
Comments and Notes: No collective t.p.; titles taken from captions to each of the 4 works, in order of their appearance in the volume. Edited by Joannes Sulpitius Verulanus. The authors collected here are traditionally known as the Scriptores rei militaris. The 4 parts were undoubtedly also sold separately. Because of their lack of pagination and signing, it would be difficult to determine a proper order for the parts (they are found in various combinations; cf. Goff and BM 15th cent.). Imprint from Goff. Each work has its own colophon; all 4 read the same up to the date: Impressum Rom[a]e per … Eucharium Silber alias Franck. The dates in the 1st 2 colophons are expressed entirely in words; in modern reckoning they are respectively 29 Jan. 1487 and 15 Feb. 1487. The latter 2 colophons have dates anno 1487 die vero prima Iunii and anno Domini 1487 septimo Idus Iunii [7 June]. The ill. (military tactical formations in the work by Aelianus) are created by the use of ordinary printer's types arranged in patterns showing the positioning of troops. Leaves printed on both sides. Unsigned gatherings. Pages [117]-[118] and [213]-[214] are blank; Dibner Library copy is wanting p. [117]-[118]. Guide-letters. Imperfect: Holes torn in leaf [10] of Aelianus, with some loss of text; outer margins of Modestus damaged and repaired, with slight loss of text. With: Rufus, Sextus. De historia Romana]. Sexti Ruffi uiri consularis Valentiano Augusto De historia Ro. libellus incipit. Impressus Rom[a]e : per Eucharius Silber al[ia]s Franck, anno D[omi]ni 1491 mensis Augusti die xxiii. Bound together in this volume, subsequent to publication, between the works by Aelianus and Modestus. Bookplate: Ex libris Joh[ann]is Comitis de Kimberley. Provenance: From the library of Charles Spencer, 3rd Earl of Sunderland, 1674-1722, with his shelf-mark, LL5:34; sold Nov. 1882. Bookplate: Burndy Library … gift of Bern Dibner. Eighteenth-century binding of full red morocco; gilt-tooled covers, spine and inside dentelles; marbled endpapers.
