Listed in ISTC as being in the Burndy Library. At least seven copies have the dedication printed in gold in a variant typesetting (BL, C.2.c.1; Paris BN (2, 1 on vellum, 1 on paper); Munich BSB (2); Budapest Univ; Augsburg SStB). Copies are known with leaves 2-9 in variant typesetting (see GW Anm. 2). For stop-press variants see C. B├╝hler in Gb Jb 1966, pp.102-104. Euclides is the author of the first 13 books, Hypsicles of the 14th while the 15th belongs to the school of Isidorus Milesius (Hillard). Translated from Arabic by Adelardus, of Bath, edited by Giovanni Campano. While books I-XIII are genuine (Cf. Th. Heath. The thirteen books of Euclid's Elements. 1956, v. 3, p. 519), book XIV is a work of the 2d cent. by Hypsicles and book XV, the work of a Roman land-surveyor of the 6th cent. Imprint from colophon. First edition of Euclid's Elements. Signatures: a10 b-r8. Dedicatory letter by Ratdolt on verso of leaf a1. Incipit on leaf a2 printed in red; 3 sided woodcut border. Woodcut diagrams are set in a wide margin close to the theorems to which they relate. Correct reading in line 45, p. [227]. Final leaf blank. Burndy Library bookplate: Gift of Stanley M. Loomis. Binding signed K A with device (key?); attributed to K. Adams.
