Comments and Notes: Caption titles (from incipits, leaves a1 recto and e1 recto). The Theorica planetarum is usually considered to be by the Cremona astrologer Gherardo da Sabbioneta, although some authorities ascribe it to the Gerardus Cremonensis who died 1187. Cf. Dict. of scientific biog., suppl., p. 189 for a summary of the evidence. Both works were first printed in 1472. Cf. Comments and Notes: Edited with a commentary by Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples. Imprint from Goff. The last paragraph of the commentary (leaf C10 verso) refers to the deposition of the relics of SS. Denis, Rusticus, and Eleutherius on "qui[n]to Idus Nouembris" 1494 (usually dated 9 October 1494), indicating the year of printing should be reckoned "more gallicano." The colophon transcribed in Copinger and in NUC Pre-1956, v. 513, p. 485 is not present in this variant printing. Signatures: a8 b6 c10. Leaves printed on both sides. Leaves printed on both sides; the text of Theorica planetarum is in double columns. Printer's device on colophon (leaf o6 recto). Initials; guide-letters; leaf u2 is signed n2; register on leaf &6 recto. Regiomontanus' Disputationes contra Cremonensia deliramenta, which should be part of this edition according to the incipit on leaf a3 recto, is apparently not included. "Theorice nouae planetarum [Georgii Purbachii] cum commento [Francisci Capuani]" has special half-title on p. [300] (leaf [con]4 verso), not present in variant printing. The Dibner Library copy is the variant printing complete in [292] pages, as described in Goff and Copinger. Leaf a1 has been detached and remounted on a strip of paper inserted at front of volume. Bookplate: Burndy Library … gift of Bern Dibner. Bookplate: Ex libris Pierre Duhem. Old ms. annotations and diagrams in ink. Text bordered throughout by brown ruled lines drawn in ink. Copinger mentions a copy from a Hoepli catalogue (1893), apparently with 146 instead of 150 leaves.
