Leonard Karr (1913-1995)
Born: Yakima, Washington
Creator/Designer

  • Graduated from public school in 1931.
  • A sign painter and designer by profession his entire life, Karr was also an ardent and successful fisherman and hunter, especially of geese. Combining his talents and interests, he designed gear to help him with his hobby, including decoys, pit covers, and a stake hole punch.
  • In 1933, he built a self-designed kayak for hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities.
  • In 1954, Karr patented two-dimensional goose decoys (U.S. Pat # 2,746,196). He did not renew his patent after its initial term, and after it expired his basic design was pirated.
