August 8 This morning we awoke to find that the water had dropped about an inch, so that at least it is no higher. It has been a fortunate circumstance that the mail arrived at the beginning of this period of being marooned as it has served most admirably to help in passing the days. During the day the water dropped a trifle, but no more than an inch. {p. 206}
