The model for this giraffe was a specimen skin sent to the collection of Prince Willem V of Holland by Robert Jacob Gordon (1743–1795), head of the garrison at Cape Town. Gordon never published, but he made significant contributions to the study of Africa’s natural history, readily sharing his observations and sketches with others.
