The
National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) Library is one of
20 libraries in the Smithsonian Institution Libraries (SIL) system.
Established in 1999, it is housed in the Cultural Resources Center
(CRC), Suitland, Maryland. The CRC, a collections depository and
research facility, is one of three facilities which comprises the
NMAI. The other facilities include the George Gustave Heye Center
(GGHC), a major exhibition facility located in the U.S. Custom House,
Manhattan, New York, and the museum currently under construction
on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
The
NMAI Library's interior incorporates the unique elements of the
CRC's architecture which reflects numerous Native American cultural
and design principles, including carefully placed windows and skylights
that introduce natural light. The NMAI Library provides access to
the latest library and information technologies in a comfortable,
welcoming environment.
