The Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum announces the formal launch of the GlobalPhilatelicLibrary.org website, a centralized information gateway to the world’s greatest philatelic research. Founding partners include the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum and Smithsonian Libraries in Washington, D.C., the Royal Philatelic Society London and the American Philatelic Research Library in Bellefonte, Pa.

The Smithsonian Libraries will host international and New York Times bestselling author Steve Berry for a writer’s workshop at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History on October 18. The event is part of Berry’s History Matters Foundation, which raises funds for historic preservation and conservation projects around the world.

Nancy E. Gwinn, director of Smithsonian Libraries, and Martin R. Kalfatovic, associate director for Digital Services at Smithsonian Libraries, have been appointed to new positions within the global Biodiversity Heritage Library.

In February the Biodiversity Heritage Library launched eight collections of selected BHL content on the new iTunes U. They are dedicated to a variety of themes, and this release increases exposure of BHL material and is an innovative way to reach new audiences.

The Smithsonian Institution Libraries will hold the 2011 Dibner Library Lecture Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 5 p.m. in the Smithsonian Castle Commons. The lecture is free and open to the public. This year’s guest lecturer is author Laura J. Snyder, associate professor of philosophy at St. John’s University in New York City. At the Smithsonian Libraries event, Snyder will speak on “The Philosophical Breakfast Club and the Invention of the Scientist.”
