Search Engines

Many search engines index millions of websites, arranging and ranking results with selected criteria

Alltheweb
Here you have access to the web, news, pictures, video and audio sources. You may search using Boolean operators, in 36 languages, or in any language. You may also filter results from specific domains like .gov, .com or .edu. This site is from Overture Services Inc.

AltaVista

Alta Vista means view from above in Spanish. It was the first searchable, full-text database on the World Wide Web in 1995, and it has changed over time. Advanced Alta Vista searches may be conducted using the Boolean search terms, "AND," "OR," and "NOT." Researchers may search for exact phrases, titles, URLs, domain locations and date ranges. They may remove words and phrases from the search. Click on "Advanced Search" for more precise, in depth research.
Alta Vista also hosts "Babelfish," the web's first internet machine translation service. Web pages may be translated to and from Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.

Google
Google, the world's largest search engine, is often rated "the best" in some well publicized surveys. Google may be searched in 35 languages and features cached links, which provide a snapshot of each page when it was first indexed. Users may choose "Advanced Search" to use standard advanced operators, as well as some that are quite sophisticated and unique. It is possible to search synonyms in Google by putting a ~ tilde sign in front of a search term. A "travelling" GOOGLE TOOLBAR permits Google searching without being on the Google homepage.
