FINDING HOUSING IN THE DC AREA
The
Smithsonian does not provide a residence for our visiting scholars,
unfortunately. To assist in your search, the Smithsonian's Office
of Fellowships has prepared a guide providing the latest information
about locating appropriate housing in the DC area. Their publication,
Housing for Interns, Fellows and Visiting
Scholars 2004, is available here in .pdf format. The American
History Museum (where the Dibner Library is located) also offers
an online housing guide for their interns, available here.
Rents
can vary greatly within the metropolitan DC area. However, the following
chart will give you an approximate idea of what you can expect to
pay per month for an unfurnished apartment. You may find housing
substantially cheaper if you rent a room in a group house or shared
apartment.

If
you have colleagues who work at a local university, they might be
able to find housing opportunities at the university housing office.
It may be worth searching for such listings online, though some
are not available to the public.
George
Washington University's Graduate
Student Services page (click on the "Student Life &
Housing" link and look for the "Guide to off-campus housing"
link) provides helpful information on DC neighborhoods, transportation
and safety, and links to several online resources, including area
classifed ads.
American
University in DC has an off
campus housing list that is accessible to the public. It should
be useful after you peruse the above guides to get an idea of what
neighborhood might be best for you.
