A man from Tombe holding bow and arrows. The type of bow and arrow used by the pigmies is noticeably different from those used by the Papuans of the Lake Plain region. The pigmy arrows have long hard-wood points, the tips of which are usually wrapped with bark to prevent them splitting or shattering when they strike an object. These points are usually ornamented with incised designs into which chalk or lime is rubbed. Arrow points are also made of bamboo. |

Shaving with a stone knife. The whiskers are plucked out between the thumb nail and the edge of the crescent shaped flat stone blade. All of the pigmies keep the upper lip smooth shaven in this fashion and many keep the entire face plucked smooth. Naturally most of the pigmies have rather hairy beards. A man may either shave himself or someone else will frequently do it for him. |

Tombe. The man on the right is weaving an arm band of rattan. Around his neck is suspended the typical man’s bag decorated with boar’s tusks and having a piece of cassawary [sic] leg bone attached in front. Tucked under an arm band on his left arm is a bright colored flower. The men frequently ornament themselves by wearing flowers or bright colored leaves in this manner.
